Leaky Oils = Messy Bottles! Which Oils Don’t Travel Well…

We just got back from a trip to Florida (we had an AMAZING time!), and of course I took my oils along with me.  Here is a picture of all my Young Living goods I brought and posted on Instagram:

Oils for vacation

We flew to Florida, and I have never had trouble flying with my essential oils before (see this post here).  But on this trip, you can see from the picture above that I had some issues with oil leaking and eating away at my bottle labels a bit.  This photo was taken after our flights TO Florida.  When I opened my ziplock bag once we arrived in Florida, there wasn’t much oil in the bag, but I could definitely tell some oil had leaked a bit as evidenced by some of the labels coming off and by the strong aroma of oil!

But check out what my bottles looked like after enduring our flight home!!!  :(

Leaky Essential Oil Roller

Yeah… some of the labels got completely eaten away by leaky oil!!  :(  After our flights home there still wasn’t a ton of oil in the bag, but clearly enough to do this!!  I couldn’t figure out why it happened, until suddenly it dawned on me after determining almost the only leaky oil I was smelling was Tranquil… ROLL-ONS LEAK DURING FLIGHT!

There are several different cosmetic products I have used over the years with a roller-ball applicator, and I have learned the hard way over time that flying with them is always a bad idea.  It doesn’t matter how tightly the cap is on, I think the pressure changes caused by flight cause liquid to leak out of roller ball tops.  I have learned to either 1) leave these cosmetics at home or 2) put them in a separate smaller snack-sized baggie so when it DOES leak, it doesn’t get all over everything else.  I actually left one of my favorite products at home this trip because I KNOW this always happens!!

I mean, SERIOUSLY.  Why it never occurred to me I might have a problem with my essential oil roll-ons is beyond me!  My Breathe Again roll-on fared better than my Tranquil roll-on, but those 2 roll-on bottles were definitely problematic.  The rest of my oils (with regular orifices and lids) seemed to be completely fine, but clearly their labels were damaged!

So What to Do?!

So what can you do about this problem, if you will be flying with your oils??  Next time I fly, I will probably forgo bringing any oils with roll-on tops.  There are enough oils I can use in their place.  For instance, I can use R.C. instead of Breathe Again.

If there is an oil in a roll-on bottle that I know I NEED to bring with me, I will definitely be packing it in a smaller, snack-sized baggie before putting it in with the rest!

And the Bottles With Unreadable Labels?

Thankfully I don’t get rid of my empty essential oil bottles, my husband gives me a funny look every time I add another empty oil bottle to the basket in my closet.  :)  But I simply found empty bottles for the oils that had really damaged labels, (so I grabbed empty bottles of Lemon, Lavender, etc), and I dumped the oil from the damaged bottles into the good bottles!  Hording can sometimes come in helpful, you know?!

Have you had this happen with roll-ons during flight?!  Or is it just me??!  ;)

Why Thieves Spray is a Must Have for the Hotel Room!

Young Living Thieves Spray

I’ll admit, I’m pretty neurotic when it comes to cleanliness.  I probably wasn’t as bad before I had kids… but, well, I had kids.  And now uncleanliness makes me crazy.  This is probably one of the reasons that I LOVE Thieves oil and the Thieves line of essential oil-infused products from Young Living!

A little history about the Thieves oil blend… it was created from research based on 15th century thieves who were able to stay healthy even when they robbed bodies of the dead and dying.  When apprehended and forced to tell their secret, they disclosed a blend of herbs, oils, and spices they used to protect themselves.  Young Living’s Thieves essential oil blend is based on this formula.

Many of us know about Thieves oil, but did you know about Thieves Spray??!!  It is a ideal for purifying small surfaces – I LOVE this!!  It is contains the Thieves essential oil blend and is in a spray form!

My Hotel Experience

I recently traveled to Salt Lake City, Utah for Young Living’s annual convention.  Although the hotel was nice, I’m pretty sure there are only certain surfaces in a hotel that get wiped down between guests… oh it gives me a little shiver to think about it!  Ha!  I mean, have you ever seen those 20/20 episodes where they go into the hotel rooms with a black light??  Yuck!!  I really try not to think about it too much… but some things I can’t help!

The first thing I do after traveling through airports and public transportation all day is wash my hands with some good ol’ fashion soap and water!!  But when you’re in a hotel room, I feel like everything else is dirty!!  I think about all the people who don’t wash their hands after using the restroom (or who don’t wash them in general), who were probably just in the room touching everything!!  I’m thinking about…

  • light switches
  • door handles (to the room and in the bathroom)
  • the toilet handle
  • the TV REMOTE (!)
  • the phone

… just to name a few!  It’s probably the TV remote that grosses me out the most for some reason!

I had brought my Thieves Spray with me, and I’m so glad I had it with me.  I immediately sprayed down all those areas that probably never get wiped down (like the REMOTE!! and the light switches, etc. etc.) and used one of the extra washcloths in the room to wipe them dry.  Ahhhh!  It made me so much more comfortable staying there!!

I will never travel to another hotel room without my Thieves spray.  Another benefit is that it gets rid of the stale and/or stinky-cleaner smell hotels can have and replaces it with the wonderful smell of Thieves!!

Essential Oils for Vacation, and How to Pack Them for Travel!

Essential Oils for Vacation

It’s taken me a couple of months to write this post because, honestly, I had to let the post-vacation blues wear off before I looked at our vacation pictures again!!  My husband and I felt like we were in a period of mourning when we got home from vacation, it was THAT good to decompress, relax, and have no responsibilities for a week.

My husband and I have gone back to the same resort in Cabo several years in a row, and it’s safe to say it’s one of our favorite places.  We look forward to this trip all year long.  There are really no words for how awesome it is… the warm weather, the beach, the drink of the day, the chips and guac, our own palapa on the beach, not having to do ANYTHING but read and relax… clearly I could go on and on.  ;)

But as much as I love BEING on vacation, I don’t particularly love TRAVELING.  As I’ve gotten older, I have more anxiety of flying (just feeling trapped in the plane and paranoid someone is going to get sick), I don’t like eating airport food (after cleaning up our diet several years ago, it’s hard to find something in an airport that doesn’t make me feel crummy afterwords), and I really hate public bathrooms (enough said).  But this is the first year I’ve had Young Living Essential OILS to bring with me on this trip!!

How I Packed My Oils for the Flight

I didn’t care if I was going to have to sneak my oils with me, they were coming with ME and not in my checked suitcase!  In October I had flown with my oils, so I wasn’t too worried about it on this trip, except that it was an international flight and I didn’t know if the rules would be different!  They weren’t.  :)

How to fly with oils

Basically I put everything I wanted to bring in a quart-sized ziplock bag.  You are allowed 1 quart sized bag, and each bottle must be less than 3.4 oz (which the oils are).  So I packed that bag full of my oils .  :)  It did need to go through the x-ray, which can lower the frequency of the oil.  But according to many people much more educated in this aspect than I am, the frequency of the oil does return to normal.

Between last trip and this one, I’ve been through airport security several times with my oils this way, and it’s been completely fine.

Arrived Safely!

Essential Oils for Traveling

Everything arrived safely!  It’s important to make sure your caps are on tight!!  I double checked all of them before taking off, and there were still a few drops that managed to squeak out.  :)  Nothing disastrous, though.

What I Brought on Vacation

It was super tough to narrow down which oils I was going to bring because my kids were at home with my parents, and I wanted to leave the majority of the oils with them… but I wanted to make sure we had what we needed, too!  Fortunately I have doubles of a few of our most important ones (Thieves, Peppermint, Lavender, DiGize), so that was nice.  :)

Well my biggest fear when traveling is feeling yucky… sometimes just the worry makes me feel bad!  I know, you probably think I’m neurotic, and it’s probably true.  Anyways, DiGize was definitely coming with me, especially to Mexico!  It definitely came in handy, and I will ALWAYS travel with this one.

I brought Peppermint for the same reason as DiGize, to soothe digestion if needed.  Peppermint is great for supporting normal digestion.  No matter how ‘clean’ you try to eat while traveling or on vacation, sometimes it seems impossible!!  I also took a few sniffs of Peppermint on the airplane to get the stale-airplane smell from overpowering my senses and calming my stomach before the flight!

Stress Away

So we’ve already established that I’m probably neurotic.  :)  Stress Away helped me immensely on this trip.  I always use it at night before bed, but about a week before our trip I started using it during the day, too, along with prayer, for a smooth trip!  Leaving your kids for a week, no matter how great of care you are leaving them in, is stressful!  My parents watched them and I knew they would be fine, but there is still a level of stress about leaving them!  Stress Away oil helped me feel physically calmer before the trip and while traveling.

Thieves is another essential oil blend I wouldn’t travel to another country without!

Myrrh and Ylang Ylang

I brought these 2 essential oils because they are all great for the skin.  Myrrh makes my skin feel great in the morning when I use it before bed.  Ylang Ylang was a new one, but I brought it to use at night on my skin as well.  My skin feels super smooth in the morning, especially when I use the Ylang Ylang with Myrrh!

Since Lavender is known as the ‘Swiss Army Knife’ of essential oils, I brought it with me, especially since I couldn’t bring my whole oil arsenal!  Lavender is also a great skin soother, so I thought it might be helpful after being in the sand and salt.  Thankfully we didn’t need our lavender, either!  But lavender is a great all-purpose oil, and I often carry it with me.

Hopefully next time you travel, this gives you an idea of what may come in handy for you.  Now if there were only an oil to take us back in time to Cabo!!!  ;)
